Cops VS. Kids Soccer Game

On December 18, 2011, the Escondido Police Department held its second annual soccer game against local community youths. The Boys and Girls Club Escondido Impact soccer teams are run out of the Mission park area. In 2009 the Escondido Police Department’s Police Athletic League (PAL) formed a partnership with these teams. At the end of each year the police department puts a team together to play the youths in a soccer game. Sgt. Eric Skaja is responsible for putting the police team together.

Last year the kids won by a score of 5-4. This year Sgt. Skaja put together a team that would hopefully even the score this year. The youths were in the age range of 14-18 and the average age of the officers was about 35. However, the police did have a couple of young former PAL players and our secret weapon was Escondido Impact coach Jose Duenas. For the second year in a row Jose scored two goals for us. I would not want to be him when he goes to his next practice with the kids. Rounding out the scoring for the police were Sgt. Kevin Toth, Sgt. Eric Skaja and Christian Solorio, who is the younger brother of Officer Ray Solorio. Officer Whitaker did not score a goal but he had the highlight of the day. Whitaker performed a flying back bicycle kick and he actually hit the ball.

The kids were loaded with talent and they did not get tired. Candido Balbuena (a junior at Escondido High School) and Carlos Espinoza (a junior at Orange Glen High School) put in all the goals for the youth team. At the end of the game the score was tied 5-5. The kids wanted a shootout or overtime but the police were happy to limp away with a tie. A fun time was had by all.

At the end of the game PAL provided pizza and handed out Community Service Awards to two youths, Carlos Espinoza and Jorge Gomez. The kids were also surprised to see a soccer player from the Mexican National team named Natalie Garcia. She graciously took time out of her day to watch the game and talk to the kids about hard work and reaching goals. Natalie is the daughter of Escondido Police Officer Joe Garcia. Officer Garcia also played in the game. After the police team heals up, they may go after these youngsters again. The kids would play again next week but the adults will need about six months of recovery.
